A RESOLUTION
Upon the Death of Homer Fleetwood
WHEREAS, Homer Fleetwood departed this life on July 20,
1990; and
• WHEREAS, Homer Fleetwood was a lifelong resident of
Evanston and was an exemplary student and athlete at Evanston
Township High School and Northwestern University; and
WHEREAS, Homer Fleetwood started as a playground
instructor at Foster Field during his university years and became
Director of the Foster Center for 25 years; and during his tenure as
Director he organized the Foster Center Senior Citizens Group;
trained many boys and girls to become physical education leaders;
secured athletic scholarships and jobs for boys and girls both
locally and nationally; and developed a recreation program that was
recognized by the National Recreation Association and served as a
model for similar recreation programs; and,
WHEREAS, while serving as Director of Foster Center he
campaigned to have the Field House built; and for his achievements
in the recreation field, that structure was later to bear his name,
along with that of Edwin B. Jourdain,•Jr.; and

WHEREAS, Homer Fleetwood, throughout his long life,
immersed himself actively in the political, social and religious
life of Evanston;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Evanston on behalf of itself, the Mayor, City Manager,
City Officials and the residents of this community, expresses its
heartfelt grief and sense of loss at the passing of Homer Fleetwood.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be made a part
of the permanent records of the City of Evanston and that a copy,
executed by the Mayor and attested by the City Clerk, be presented
to the members of his bereaved family.
