A RESOLUTION
I
I SAFE SCHOOL ZONES
•WHEREAS, the City of Evanston seeks to protect its
�! children in the schools, parks, and neighborhoods from the
i; dangers of drugs and gangs; and
WHEREAS, the State of Illinois provides for "Safe
School Zones" areas in which increased penalties may be imposed
for certain drug, weapon, or gang related crimes committed
within 1000 feet of the lot lines of schools or parks; and
WHEREAS, such "Safe School Zones" are both a deterrent
i to illegal activity and symbol of community wide zero tolerance
for the sale or use of drugs; and
WHEREAS, law enforcement and increased penalties are
i recognized as an essential component of a comprehensive anti-
drug strategy that should also include prevention and education,
i
treatment and community action; and
• WHEREAS, the City -School Liaison Committee, and the
Mayor's Special Task Force on Substance Abuse have both
recommended that signs be posted confirming Evanston's
commitment to "Safe School Zones".
I NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
SECTION 1: That the City Traffic Engineer is
hereby authorized to make available for
posting on school grounds "Safe School Zone" signs as follows:
j a) Eight signs for Evanston Township High School.
b) Four signs for each Middle school.:
c) One Sign for each grade school.
SECTION 2: That the City Traffic Engineer is further
• authorized to make available to the Evanston
Recreation Department three "Safe School Zone" signs for posting
i
at the Chandler, Crown, and Fleetwood-Jourdain Centers.

SECTION 3: This resolution shall be in full force
and effect from and after its passage,
i
approval, and publication in the manner provided by law.
