A RESOLUTION
i
Upon the Death of Edwin Bush Jourdain, Jr.
• WHEREAS, Edwin Bush Jourdain, Jr. departed this life on June
29, 1986; and
WHEREAS, Edwin B. Jourdain, Jr. was an Alderman of the Fifth 1
Ward of the City of Evanston from.1931 to 1947, the first Black elected
offical in Evanston and the North Shore, who began the tradition of Black j
representation in the Evanston City Council; and
WHEREAS, Edwin B. Jourdain, Jr. during his long tenure as
Alderman, served as a member of the Health, Sanitation and Charities
Committee, the Parks Committee, the Sewerage and Drainage Committee, the
Finance Committee, the Relief Committee, the Streets Committee, the Fire
Committee, the Lighting Committee,' the Public Buildings Committee and as
Chairman of the Building Committee; and
WHEREAS, Edwin B. Jourdain, Jr. was a strong advocate of civil
rights, who successfully lead the fight to integrate Evanston movie
theaters, beaches, public sporting events, and Northwestern University's
• Patten Gymnasium; and
WHEREAS, Edwin B. Jourdain, Jr. served as the first Black
Assistant Superintendent for public education in Illinois and helped to lay
the groundwork for the hiring of Black teachers in the Evanston Public
Schools; and
WHEREAS, Edwin B. Jourdain, Jr. led the fight to change the
name of an Evanston street to Garnett Place in honor of a World War I hero;
and
WHEREAS, Edwin B. Jourdain, Jr. marshalled the efforts which j
led to the eventual building of Foster Center, which now bears his name; and

^ WHEREAS, Edwin B. Jourdain, Jr. served the citizens of his
Ward as well as'the citizens of the entire City with immense dedication,
giving most liberally of .his time, energy and ability; and
WHEREAS, the city Council of the City of Evanston desires to
pay tribute to Edwin B. Jourdain, Jr;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the
City of Evanston, on behalf of itself, the Mayor, the City Manager, City
Officials, and the residents of this community, expresses its heartfelt
grief and sense of loss at the passing of Edwin B. Jourdain, Jr.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be
• prepared and presented to the members of his bereaved family.
