HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1984-033-R-84i I is • • • 33-R-84 Recommending Support for a Campaign to Secure More Adequate State Assistance Grants for Poor Illinois Families WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Evanston supports a variety of human services, including the voluntary provisions of emergency financial assistance to poor Evanston families; and WHEREAS, the Town Board of Trustees of Evanston Township supports a large General Assistance program for poor Evanstonians ineligible for any other federal or state assistance; and WHEREAS, State policy for the provision of financial assistance in Illinois is to promote family stability by "helping persons in need to maintain a livelihood compatible with health and well being"' and WHEREAS, the Illinois Department of Public Aid, which is mandated to provide assistance, published a Standard of Need for families which i details the minimum subsistence level a family needs for living expenses;, - and WHEREAS, the actual grant levels provided have not been increased for four (4) years, so that many Illinois.families now receive as little as 48% of the standard of need as determined by the State itself; and WHEREAS, families who are receiving public assistance in Illinois are,'therefore,impoverished and often unable to meet their most basic needs; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Evanston and Town Board of Trustees of Evanston Township that they support a campaign to secure a more adequate assistance grant through the Legislature in 1984 as a first step towards a goal of bringing assistance grants equitably in line with the standards set by the State for Illinois families; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Resolution be transmitted forthwith to Governor James Thompson, Evanston's elected officials in the General Assembly and the Illinois Campaign for Family Stability.
