A RESOLUTION
Urging Federal and State
Lawmakers to Prohibit the Possession
j and Sale of Handguns
WHEREAS, the sales and use of handguns in the United States
continues to increase at an alarming rate; and
WHEREAS, handguns have been shown to play a major role in the
commission of homicide, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and accidental
injury and death; and
WHEREAS, the easy and convenient availability of handguns
increases the potential of handgun related deaths and injuries; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Evanston believes that
it is necessary and desirable to protect the reslidents of Evanston and all
of our neighbors from loss of property, death, and injury by controlling
the availability of handguns; and
WHEREAS, the problem of handgun control is a continuing item
on the agenda of the Police Services Committee of the City Council of
the City of Evanston; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Evanston has taken
action to control the availability of handguns in Evanston by adopting
a local ordinance prohibiting the sale of firearms and firearm ammunition
in the Ci ty; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Evanston desires to
• strengthen the effectiveness of this local action by encouraging the
State and Federal governments to prohibit the possession and sale of hand-
guns.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
SECTION 1: That the Congress of the United States and the
Illinois General Assembly immediately consider and
enact effective legislation to prohibit the possession and sale of hand-
guns.
SECTION 2: That our neighboring municipalities be encouraged
to consider and enact similar resolutions or
ordinances prohibiting the possession and sale of handguns.
SECTION 3: That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a
certified copy of this Resolution to the Federal
and -State Representativies of the City of Evanston and the municipalities
of the Northwest Municipal Conference encouraging them to take whatever
action is necessary and support legislation to prohibit the possession
and sale of handguns.
