HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1980-066-R-80• r1 • I I A RESOLUTION Recommending the Adoption of Legislation Regulating the Wholesale and Retail Sale of Beverages in Returnable Containers WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Evanston finds it in the best interests of its citizens and the citizens of the State of Illinois to limit, control, and decrease the creation of non -returnable container wastes in order to reduce municipal solid waste collection and sanitary landfill costs for economic and environmental benefits; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Evanston does find that regulating the wholesale and retail sale of beverages in returnable con- tainers will foster and promote these benefits in Evanston and through- out the State of Illinois; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Evanston does find that such regulation is most effective when adopted on a regional or statewide basis; and WHEREAS, studies conducted in other states where legislation regu- lating the sale of beverages in returnable containers has been adopted indicate that such legislation effectively reduces beverage container litter as well as the volume of solid waste generated and the costs of solid waste disposal: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Evanston, Cook County, Illinois that it urgently recommends that the General Assembly of the State of Illinois adopt legislation requiring beverage containers sold in Illinois to be returnable with a refundable deposit; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be transmitted forth- with to the Illinois State Legislators of the First and Eleventh Districts, to Governor,.James Thompson, and to the chief elected officials of the City i of Chicago and the municipalities which are members of the Northwest j Municipal Conference.
