HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1980-027-R-80.7 • I� ,I I� I ± 27-R-80 i� A RESOLUTION Recommending the Adoption of Mandatory Sentencing for 'i Felonies Involving the Use of a Firearm 4/24/80 I WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Evanston is committed to ...reducing the amount of crime within the State of Illinois; and i WHEREAS, there has been an increase in the number of felonies j I: perpetrated within the State of Illinois, and a great percentage of these felonies involve the use of firearms; and it WHEREAS, in those states which have adopted mandatory sentencing laws for persons convicted of using firearms to commit felonies, there has i been a decrease in the rate of such felonies; and WHEREAS, mandatory sentencing laws are an effective tool in the reduction of such felonies; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Evanston that it urgently recommends that the General Assembly of the State of Illinois adopt a mandatory sentencing law providing for mandatory in- carceration of those convicted of the commission of a felony by the use of I I a firearm. p ., BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be transmitted forth- i, with to the Illinois State Legislators of the First and Eleventh District and to Governor James Thompson. i 'TTE C iffy Clerk Adopted: 1980 j) i; I
