HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1970-025-R-700 9 25-R-70 R t S O L U T I O N • WHEREAS, Northwestern University has announced in the press and by other means that the Chicago Bears will be permitted to use Dyche Stadium on Sunday, September 27, 1970 for a professional football game with'the Minnesota Vikings; and M I WHEREAS, the University's Legal Counsel informed the Zoning Board of Appeals by a letter dated June lb, 1970 that the University declines to seek a zoning variation and has concluded on the basis of legal research • that "the University will not be required to obtain this variation"; and " WHEREAS, the present Evanston zoning ordinance was purposely drafted to .! allow and accommodate a wide range of University activities in University Districts but to prohibit "commercial activities" such as pro- fessional football; and WHEREAS, a Chicago Bears professional football game would draw an estimated crowd of 55,000 people and would therefore place a heavy burden on the street and parking facilities in neighborhoods throughout North Evanston and the remainder of Evanston, and would place heavy ad- ditional demands on police, fire, and other municipal services; and WHEREAS, a professional football game on Sunday would disrupt. the peace and quiet of thousands of Evanston residents, would interfere with family activities, and would generally harm the quality of life for many persons; and • e M -2- WHEREAS, it is understood that the Northwestern University Board of Trustees will meet on Wednesday, June 24, 1970, to make a final decision on whether the University will permit the Chicago Bears to use Dyche Stadium on September.27, 1970: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Evanston, Illinois, that it hereby declares that professional v, t football at Dyche Stadium would constitute a violation of the Evanston zoning ordinance and would go contrary to the wishes of the City Council r" and numerous Evanston residents who have expressed themselves to the • City Council; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Northwestern University Board �t of Trustees is hereby urged by the City Council to render a decision that the University will not violate the Evanston zoning ordinance and will not.permit the playing of professional football in Dyche Stadium; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City Manager are hereby authorized and directed to transmit this resolution and other appro- priate communications to the Northwestern University Board of Trustees to achieve the purposes of this resolution. . i Mayor/ ATTEST:. ✓ City Clerk Adopted: .4 1970 —"Tu.- , I
