A RESOLUTION
Designating that portion of Foster Street between Dewey Avenue and
Ashland Avenue with the Honorary Street Name Sign,
“Foster Senior Club Way”
WHEREAS, the Foster Senior Club, founded in 1957, is Evanston’s oldest
and only African American senior organization; and
WHEREAS, the Club’s impact on Evanston is reflected in its membership,
consisting of many lifelong Evanston residents with deep family and community ties,
which represents the generations who navigated Evanston’s complex history through
desegregation and housing discrimination; and
WHEREAS, Foster Senior Club members support local initiatives through
community service, voting campaigns, working alongside the Evanston Police
Department, supporting local youth organizations, and working with the Shorefront
Legacy Center to keep the Evanston community connected and educated; and
WHEREAS, members of the Foster Senior Club include a former City
Councilmember, along with members of other local organizations, including local
churches, community organizations, the Evanston branch of the NAACP, and the Moran
Center for Justice; and
WHEREAS, the Evanston Senior Club has traditionally met weekly at the
Fleetwood Jourdain Center, located at 1655 Foster Street in the City’s Fifth Ward; and
WHEREAS, the Evanston Senior Club is a vital part of the Evanston
community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS, THAT:
SECTION 1: The foregoing recitals are hereby found as fact and
incorporated herein by reference.
SECTION 2: On behalf of the entire citizenry of the City of Evanston, the
City Council hereby expresses appreciation for the Evanston Senior Club by designating
that portion of Foster Street between Dewey Avenue and Ashland Avenue with the
Honorary Street Name Sign, “Evanston Senior Club Way.”
SECTION 3: This Resolution 130-R-26 will be in full force and effect from
and after the date of its passage and approval in the manner provided by law.
