HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024 GoalsCity of Evanston Utilities Commission 2024 Goals PURPOSE: To protect and promote the public health, safety and welfare of the citizens, businesses and institutions of Evanston, it is necessary to participate in the planning and improvement of electrical, natural gas, telephone, water and sewer services in Evanston to insure reliable and competitive service. Members of the Commission will listen to citizens' concerns. (49 0-93) (103-0-93) (89-0-10). COMMITTEE COMPOSITION: The Mayor appoints commission members with the advice and consent of the City Council. In making appointments, the Mayor may consider an individual's engineering or finance experience and their familiarity with utilities industries and regulations. Members must be residents of the City or work in the City. PERIODIC REVIEW OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Pursuant to the requirement of the ordinance creating the Utilities Commission, the following is prepared to communicate the future goals of the Commission including any change in functions, proposed programs for the year and any budgetary requirements. Number of Members: Seven (7) members appointed by the Mayor. Term: Four (4) year terms, Members may serve no more than two (2) terms. Meeting Dates: 2A Friday of each month at 7:15 A.M (subsequently revised to the 3rd Friday of each month). Maintain a full complement of Commission members and work with the City and Aldermen for recruitment. 2. Prepare a written summary of accomplishments for the preceding year. 3. Prepare a written set of goals for the forthcoming year. 4. Package the goals and accomplishments into an easily digestible medium for easy communication to residents. 5. Work with the City to update their website related to utility services and savings programs. 6. Work with the City to develop an industry leading set of lead service line replacement programs. 7. Evaluate ways for the City to support private and utility installations of geothermal/ground source energy on both private and public property. 8. Position the City to effectively address the PFAS issues associated with drinking water and the forthcoming legislation/regulations. 9. Support the implementation of the CARP, in a manner that is sensitive to residents' ability/willingness to participate. 10. Continue leveraging the experience and knowledge of the Commission members in a formal advising role. Request that the City staff identify topics for which the City would like the Commission's input on actions and report on actions that the City is considering undertaking. 11. Establish a process with the City and ComEd for evaluating the condition of the electrical grid within Evanston for the current and future needs. 12. Request an update/readout of the City's Emergency Response Plan for the Drinking Water System. Work with the City to determine any potential areas for improvement. 13. Establish periodic tours of infrastructure relevant to the Commission including the water treatment plant and facilities, sewer facilities and electrical and gas infrastructure. Budgetary Requirements: None requested
