HomeMy WebLinkAbout72-O-24 An Ordinance Setting Compensation for the Mayor Following the Report and Recommendations of the Compensation Committee8/26/2024 72-O-24 AN ORDINANCE An Ordinance Setting Compensation for the Mayor Following the Report and Recommendations of the Compensation Committee WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 1-6-10 of the City Code, the compensation of the Mayor was reviewed by a non-aldermanic compensation committee, and all municipal officers’ salaries must be fixed by ordinance pursuant to 65 ILCS 5/3.1-50-5; and WHEREAS, this compensation committee submitted a report and recommendations to the City Council, such recommendations which specified a salary increase of 26.5% for all members of the City Council, a yearly cost of living adjustment and a cash payment for any elected official who opt out of the City’s health insurance. The 26.5% increase amends the Mayor’s salary from $25,317 to $32,000; and WHEREAS, the City Council accepts the report and the recommendations of the compensation committee. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS: SECTION 1: That Section 1-6-10 of the Evanston City Code of 2012, as amended, is stricken and replaced in its entirety, and is to read as follows: 1-6-10: COMPENSATION: The compensation to be paid to the Mayor elected April 2025 and taking office in May 2025 for their services per annum is: (A) Effective May 1, 2025 – Thirty-two thousand dollars ($32,000). Beginning in May 2026, the Mayor’s salary will be increased yearly to implement a cost of Doc ID: bafe06952a4f6d7b7447f8788b78d0a228c4281cDoc ID: b6a5e5418e4a5412d6ae7b536dba4af81a88c57b 72-O-24 ~2~ living adjustment passed on the prior year’s increase in the Consumer Price Index (“CPI”) and the amount of the adjustment be the lessor of the August 1 st CPI or three percent (3%). (B) The Mayor may choose to receive medical benefits. If the Mayor opts out of the City’s health insurance plan, the Mayor will be given a monthly cash payment of two hundred eight dollars and thirty-three cents ($208.33). equivalent to the same incentive amount offered to city employees as referenced in the Employee Handbook. (C) The Mayoral compensation structure must be reviewed by a non- councilmember committee every four (4) years. This committee must submit a report and recommendation to the City Council no later than two hundred forty (240) days prior to the next regularly scheduled municipal election. SECTION 2: All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed. SECTION 3: The findings and recitals contained herein are declared to be prima facie evidence of the law of the City and shall be received in evidence as provided by the Illinois Compiled Statutes and the courts of the State of Illinois. SECTION 4: This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage, approval, and publication in the manner provided by law.
