Minutes of the Board Meeting
January 8, 1986
BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Eloine Plaut, PRESIDENT; John Ball, VICE-PRESIDENT;

CONSULTANT MEMBERS PRESENT: John Wagner
STAFF PRESENT: Ken Wenzel, ECOLOGY CENTER COORDINATOR; Kimberly Britt, ENVIRONMENTAL
ASSISTANT
A quorem was present and Eloine Plaut, as President, presided over the meeting.
The meeting was called to order at 8:00 p.m.
A motion to approve the November Meeting's minutes was entered. The minutes of
November 6, 1985 Board Meetiā¢ia were unanimously approved.
Wenzel then presented the Lake Michigan Slide Show to the Board.
Eloine Plaut then announced that due to professional pressures, her term as
President may have to come to an end. She said she would know for sure within -
the next two months and that she would keep the Board notified.
STAFF REPORT
Wenzel then presented a quick review of EEA activities.
The Spring Programming has been developed into a package series that has been
titled "The Compleat Gardener". A discussion ensued regarding this programming
effort along with talk of developing this series into a certification program
in the next few years.
The Summer Camp Program was discussed, along with the brochures that were developed
in conjunction with the Recreation Department at the City.
Discussion turned to the Lighthouse Greenhouse construction. Wenzel told the
Board that the contractor is going to put up plastic around the structure in
order to moderate temperatures so that the glass can be put in and the work
completed.
The Ecology Center roof has been corn~;eted and we are waiting for the ceiling to
be repaired by city crews.
Wenzel them discussed the Bird Seed Sales. Wenzel stated that sales have been
very good, but he was beginning to get worried about the wear & tear to the
Ecology Center's floor due to the increasing poundage. Menzel suggested utilizing
the Recycling Center in the future for the week -end pick-ups. The Board felt
it would be a good idea and we should keep it in mind for next year.
LIGHTHOUSE LANDING ADVISORY COMMITTEE UPDATE
Lynn Needham updated the Board on the Lighthouse Landing Advisory Committee meeting.
She felt it was very good and productive. A plan of action had been devised by
Wenzel, and the committee thoroughly accepted it. A discussion ensued regarding
the outcome. Plaut asked that notes from that meeting be attached to these
minutes so the Board can look them over.
Weekend Lighthouse Tours were discussed. The result of this situation is that the

Lighthouse Landing Park District will take over the running of the weekend tours.
We will keep the Maritime Center and the Nature Center seven days a week in order
to deveiope programming that would be a complement to the Lighthouse Tours.
At this point, Wenzel brought up Don Terras' request for a copy of the Lighthouse
Movie to show when he gives the tours. The Board approved. Wenzel is going
to look into turning the film into videotape. Wenzel was instructed to look into
the cost and report back to the Board.
A discussion then resulted over the status of some extra funds that were originally
restricted for special projects. It was decided that this should be an agenda
item for March's Board meeting. At which time, the Board will vote on what action
should be taken with these funds and then turn the matter over to the Long -Range
Planning Committee for further development.
SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATES
Meal Laatsch updated the Board about the Fundraiser in April. Laatsch asked that
the staff get the underwriter letters out and to start looking into food donations.
This subcommittee will meet again the week of January 27th.
The Long -Range Planning Committee had no updating, but has planned to meet the
third week in January.
A motion was put before the Board as to whether staff could send out a grant
proposal to the Field Corporation. Motion was unanimously approved.
There being no further business, Eloine Plaut motioned that the meeting be adjourned.
Ball seconded the motion. Meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
The next scheduled meeting of the Ladd Arboretum Committee will be Wednesday,
March 5, 1966 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ecology Center.
