HomeMy WebLinkAboutORDINANCES-1961-080-O-6180-0-61 AN ORDINANCE Providing for the Licensing of Carters and those Transporting Goods for Hire. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS° SECTION l.- That there be added to Chapter 43, Article VII of the Code of the City of Evanston 1957, Sections 43-79 to 43-82, inclusive, licensing of carters and those engaged in the business of transporting goods for hire, which shall read as follows - Section 43-79 - Definition; Every express wagon, cart, truck, • dray, wagon, automobile, automobile car, automobile truck or other vehicle of any kind, or vehicle drawn by animals, which shall be operated, driven or employed for the purpose of transporting or conveying bundles, parcels, furniture, trunks, baggage, goods, wares, merchandise, produce or other articles, within the city for hire, shall be deemed a cart whether such vehicle is employed or hired from any public stand, barn, garage, office or other place in the city, provided, that vehicles kept or used by merchants, manufacturers, or other persons, for the carrying of their own property, or the delivery of articles and goods sold by them, shall not be required to be licensed as carters. Any person engaged in the business of operating a cart as defined herein shall be deemed a,carter. 40 Section 43-80 - License,- Every person desiring to engage in the business of a carter shall obtain a license. Application for a license shall, be made to the City Collector setting out in such application the full name and residence of the applicant, the type of cartage business he intends to pursue and the number and type of vehicles used in connection with his business as a carter. The annual license fee for each cart operated or controlled by him shall be $20. No license shall issue except upon payment of the full annual license fee. SECTION 43-31 - Emblem° The City Collector shall deliver to each carter upon issuance of a carter's license an emblem • on which shall be printed the word "Carter" together with a number registered to the licensee and the year for which such license is issued. Said emblem shall be affixed by the carter in a conspicuous place on each vehicle owned or operated by him in connection with said cartage business. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a cart as defined herein upon streets and public thoroughfares of this city which does not bear such license emblem. Section 43-82 - Penaltvg Any person violating any of the provisions of this ordinance shall be fined not less than $25 nor more than $200 for each offense, and each day such violation shall continue shall be a separate offense. SECTION 2? All ordinances or parts of or- dinances in conflict herewith are • hereby repealed. -2- 59 SECTION 3- This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage, approval and publication, according to law.
