HomeMy WebLinkAboutORDINANCES-1961-094-O-61• 94-0-61 AN ORDINANCE Amending Article I, Sections 24-1 to 24-6 Inc., "Laundries" of the Code of the City of Evanston, 1957, as amended. —82 BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS° SECTION 1° That Article I, Sections 24-1 to 24-6, Inc., of the Code of the City of Evanston 1957, as amended, providing for the licensing of laundries, be amended so that said ordinance shall provide as follows - 0 Section 24-1 - License Required - Business Definedg It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corpor- ation to engage in or carry on within the City of Evanston, the business of a laundry, launderette or laundromat, as herein defined, without first having obtained a license as herein providedo (a) Laundry, is hereby defined as any place, building structure, room, establishment or portion thereof used for the purpose of washing, drying, starching, or ironing shirts, dresses, underwear or other wearing apparel, table, bed or other household linens, towels, curtains, drapes or other washable fabrics, where such work is being done for the general public for a profit. The word "laundry" shall also include any towel or linen supply laundry maintained or operated for the purpose of washing, drying, starching or ironing of aprons, napkins, table linens, washable clothing, or similar articles, the property of such laundry, but rented or loaned for a consideration to patrons or customers of said laundry for profit. The word "laundry" shall also include any private laundry maintained or operated in connection with any hotel, restaurant or public institution, except a hospital or charitable institution where no charge is made for laundry service, and excepting also any female engaged in custom laundry work at her home for a regular family trade. (b) Launderette, shall include those establishments employing washing machine units available for use by the general public upon the deposit of a coin or the payment of a 'fee to the operator where an attendant is present at all times and performs the washing operation for the public. (c) Laundromat, shall include any establishment wherein self service coin operated washing machine units are available for use by the general public upon the deposit of a coin and which establishment has no attendant present at all times. Section 24-2 - Application; Application for a license to conduct a laundry, launderette or laundromat as herein defined shall be made in writing to the City Collector, and stating among other things, the maximum number of persons to be employed therein and the numbor of mechanical washing and drying units to be located within such establishment. Before a license shall be approved, each such application shall be approved by the Director of Buildi.n.g, the Fire Marshal and the Public Health Direct -,or. The Directo-- of B:.,ildirin shall determine • that all requirements of the Boca Basic Building Code, the zoning ordinance, the plumbing code and the electrical code of the City or Evanston, are complied with. The Fire Marshal siiall determine that all fire hazard preventions have been taken and conform to the fire prevention ordinances of the City of Evanston. The Public Health Director shall determine whether the sanitary conditions arid ot.he�: requirements under Article 11, Chapter 24 of the Code of the City of Evanston, 1957 as amended, are complied with. If the application so filed is approved by -the Director of Building, the Fire Marshal and the Public Health Director, then upon payment of the -license fee hereinafter provided, the City Collector shall there- upon issue the said applicant a license to carry on or engage in the business of operating a laundry, launderette or laund.~omat for the period therein stated. Section 24-3 - License Fes. The license fees for the carrying on the busl.nesses�a- defined in Section 24-1 shall be as follcwse -2.. 0 • (a) La!jnd.r_y and Launderette; The annual license fee for'eocfi laundry or launderette as herein defined shall be determined by the average daily number of persons engaged in such laundry as follows° 1 to 3 employees engaged . . . . . . . . $15 4 to 10 employees engaged . . . . . . . . $20 11 to 25 employees engaged . . . . . . . . $25 26 to 35 employees engaged . . . . . . . . $30 Over 1115 employees engaged . . . . . . . . $35 (b) Laundromat . . . . . . . . . . . . $ 75- per annum Section 24-4 - Revocation -of License. Any license granted udder this chapter shall be sub-ect to revo- cation for cause. The City Manager may revoke the same at any time that it shall appear from any report or recommendation of the Director of Building, Fire Marshal or Public Health Director, that the mainten- ance of an; such laundry, launderette or laundromat is dangerous or detrimental to the health, safety and general welfare of the persons employed therein or of the public. . Section 24-5 - Laundry Vehicles No vehicle of any kind shall be used for the purpose of collecting or delivering laundry work unless such vehicle shall carry upon two sides of the same, the name of the laundry, where the work is actually done and same is otherwise identified in accordance with Section 49-83 of the Code of the City of Evanston. SECTION 2� Sections 24--1 to 24-6 of Article I of the Code of the City of Evanston, as amended, are hereby expressly repealed, and all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed.
