HomeMy WebLinkAboutORDINANCES-1968-093-O-6810,9 0 • 93-0-68 AN ORDINANCE Providing for a Special Election for Alderman of the Fifth Ward WHEREAS, a vacancy has occurred in the office of Alderman of the Fifth Ward of the City of Evanston due to the resignation of Alderman Mayme Spencer on July 22, 1968, and; WHEREAS, under the provisions of Section 5-2-9 of the Illinois Municipal Code, 1961, the vacancy may be filled by special election, and; WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Evanston has determined that the best interest of the Fifth Ward and the City of Evanston require that a special election be called for the purpose of filling said vacancy. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS: SECTION 1: That a special election be and the same is hereby called to be held in the Fifth Ward of the City of Evanston on Tuesday, November 5, 1968, for the purpose of electing an Alderman to fill the unexpired term of Mayme Spencer, and until a successor is elected at the next regular Municipal election and has -qualified. SECTION 2: That said election shall be held in the regular polling places in the several precincts of the fifth ward of the City of Evanston as designated by the Board of Commissioners of Cook County for the general election to be held on said Tuesday, November 5, 11968, and that the judges appointed by said Board of Commissioners of Cook County shall officiate at and conduct said special election for and on behalf of the City of Evanston. 110 • • SECTION 3: The polls for said election shall be open at six o'clock (6:00) .:a A. M. in the morning and shall close at six o'clock (6:00) P.M. in the evening. SECTION 4: The City Clerk be;and he is hereby directed to provide for giving notice of said election and conducting said election as provided by law. SECTION 5: The City Clerk be and he is hereby authorized in the manner provided by law to prepare and cause to be printed ballots to be used at said special election, and to cause a sample thereof to be published as provided by law in a newspaper of general circulation in the fifth ward in the City of Evanston. SECTION 6: Nominations may be made by nomination papers signed in the aggregate for each candidate by qualified voters of said fifth ward equaling not less than five per cent nor more than eight per cent of the number of persons who voted at the next preceding Municipal election in said ward. Said nomination papers con- sisting of petitions for nominations and statements of candidacy shall be filed after the passage and approval of this ordinance and on or before September 15, 1968, in the office of the City Clerk.
