AN ORDINANCE
Amending Section IV.J. and Section
XII.F.3.c. of the Evanston Zoning
Ordinance, Adopted November 21, 1960.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
SECTION 1: That Section IV.J. of the Evanston
Zoning Ordinance, adopted November 21,
1960, as amended, be further amended so that the same shall
hereafter be and read as follows:
"J. PERMITTED OBSTRUCTIONS IN YARDS
This subsection regulates the obstructions
which are allowed both in required yards and
• in yards other than those that are required
in the various zoning districts. Distinc-
tions are made in some cases between the
type of use or development which is allowed
in required yards and that which is allowed
in yards other than required yards. The
following and no other yard obstructions are
allowed, subject to the restrictions contained
herein.
1. In anv vard
a. Chimneys, overhanging roof eaves,
open terraces, and awnings adjoining
the principal building, provided that
if said obstructions are located in a
required yard they shall not exceed ten
per cent of the depth or width of said
required yard.
b. Ornamental light standards and flag
poles, trees, shrubbery, hedges and
other plantings.
c. Statues and pieces of sculpture, except
as limited in required front yards.

Fences not exceeding eight feet in height,
arbors and trellises.
3. In all Rear Yards and in Side Yards Except
Reauired Side Yards
Private garages or carports, if attached
or structurally a part of the principal
building, detached private garages, open
accessory off-street parking spaces and
carports, accessory sheds, tool rooms
or other similar accessory buildings,
recreational equipment and facilities,
laundry drying equipment, arbors and
trellises.
4. In Reauired Side Yards
Arbors and trellises.
5. In Reauired Front Yards
Not more than one statue or piece of sculp-
ture not exceeding four feet in length or
• depth, nor exceeding six feet in height is
a permitted use. Statues and pieces of
sculpture which exceed the foregoing dimen-
sions and all fences are special uses.
6. Special Exceptions and Restrictions
a. Corner Lots: No obstruction higher than
thirty inches above curb level shall be
located in any portion of a required front
or side yard within twenty feet of the lot
corner formed by the intersection of any
two street lot lines, except for the
provisions relating to business signs in
item c. below, and except for the regula-
tions pertaining to yard obstructions
erected or installed by the City in item d.
below.
b. Fences: Fences not exceeding eight feet
in height may be erected in a required side
yard or rear yard when located along a lot
line or an alley which provides a boundary
between residential use on one side and
business, commercial or manufacturing use
on the other; fences not exceeding, six feet
in height may be erected in any other loca-
tion in a required side yard or rear yard.

c. Business Siqns: In any district where
business signs are permitted, a pole or
standard supported business sign may be
located at any point in a required yard
if, between the level of thirty inches
above curb level and the level of twelve
feet above curb level, the diameter or
greatest width of the supporting pole or
standards does not exceed twenty inches.
d. Municipal Exemption: In any district the
City may erect or install, fences and
landscaping materials subject to the
approval of the Traffic Engineer and
Director of Building."
SECTION 2: That Section XII.F.3.c. of the Evanston
Zoning Ordinance, adopted November 21,
1960, as amended, be further amended so that the same shall
hereafter be and read as follows:
"c. It is one of the Special Uses specifically
listed in Sections IV, VI, VII, VIII, or
IX. 11
SECTION 3: All ordinances or parts of ordinances
in conflict with the provisions of this
ordinance are hereby repealed.
SECTION 4: That this ordinance shall be in full
force and effect from and after its
passage, approval and publication in the manner provided by law.
