AN ORDINANCE
Amending Article II, "Building Code", Sections
10-10 to 10-13, inclusive, of the Code of the
City of Evanston, 1957, as amended, Adopting
the BOCA Basic Building Code, 1970 Edition.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON,
COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
SECTION 1: That Article II, Section 10-10, as amended,
is further amended by adding the following
subsection:
"15. Sections 209.2, 210.2 and 618.21 of the BOCA
• Code are hereby amended and shall read as follows:
209.2. Use Group H-2 shall include all buildings
used for housing people suffering from physical
limitations because of health or age, including
among others day care homes which care for more
than eight children including the family's natural
or adopted children under age 18, hospitails,
sanitariums, clinics, infirmaries, orphanages,
homes for aged and infirm; and buildings designed
for prosecuting public or civic services and
activities of emergency character, including
among others fire houses, police stations and
similar uses.
210.2. Use Group L-2 Structures shall include all
multiple -family dwellings having more than two
dwelling units; and shall also include all dormi-
tories, boarding and lodging houses arranged for
individuals or less. Day care homes which care for
eight (8) or less children shall also be classi-
fied as L-2 Use.

618.21 Width. All interior exitway stairways
shall be not less than forty-four (44) inches
in width except that such width may be reduced
to thirty-six (36) inches in buildings of Use
Group L-3 (one- and two-family dwellings in-
cluding those used as day care homes caring for
eight (8) or less children) or in buildings of
Use Group E (business) with an occupancy load
of not more than forty (40) below or seventy-
five (75) above grade, or in exitways from
boiler rooms and similar service spaces not
open to the public or in general use by em-
ployees. When the boiler room is less than
three hundred (300) square feet in area,
housing a low pressure boiler, and is com-
pletely enclosed in two (2) hour fireresistive
construction with approved opening protectives
and an iron ladder or other approved direct
exitway is furnished to the street, the primary
exitway stairway may be omitted." .
• SECTION 2: All ordinances in conflict herewith are
hereby expressly repealed.
SECTION 3: This ordinance shall be in full force and
effect from and after its passage, approval
and publication in the manner provided by law.
