HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1971-022-R-71RESOLUTION 22 -R-71 WHEREAS, the Chicago Transit Authority has announced its intention to close the Isabella Street Rapid Transit Station;'and WHEREAS, the closing of this station would be contrary to the public interest of the residents of the City of Evanston for the following reasons:- 1. A substantial number of residents in this area depend on said station for their regular commuting to work. 2. A substantial number of residents in this area depend on said station for essential, though irregular, non - rush hour travel. 3. A substantial number of senior citizens living in this area are totally dependent upon this station for their. travel needs; and WHEREAS, there is no good alternative source of public transportation for the residents of this area; and WHEREAS, property values in the area served by said station are main- tained and dependent in part on the proximity to said station; and WHEREAS, the policy of public bodies concerned with transportation, including the City of Evanston, has been in recent years to discourage use of the automobile and to encourage use of public transportation; and WHEREAS, abandonment of service at the Isabella Street station is likely to result in a loss of patronage and thereby endanger the continuation of other stations on the Howard Street -Linden Avenue line, and the possible abolishment of said line altogether; and WHEREAS, the Evanston City Council has gone on record in favor of sub- sidies to improve the C.T.A. system, equipment, and service; and WHEREAS, the decision to close this station has been made without pub- lic hearing or opportunity for the users of such service to comment; and WHEREAS, letters have been received from over seventy-five residents of the City of Evanston opposing the closing of this station: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Evanston, Cook County, Illinois, that it strongly opposes the closing of the Isabella Street Rapid Transit Station; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk be, and hereby is, in- structed to forward a copy of this resolution to each member of the Chicago Transit Authority Board and their General Superintendent; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the :Mayor and City Manager are hereby authorized to appear before the Chicago Transit Authority or any other body so as to fully explain the interest and position of the City of Evanston re- lating to our community's need for the Isabella Street Station and the continu- ation and improvement of the Chicago Transit Authority's service.
