HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1974-013-PR-74a � � F v � o Adopted; 3/18/74 as amended 13 - PR- 74 A Resolution Pursuing a Policy of Obtaining Compliance with Housing and Building Codes WHEREAS the City of Evanston'has pursued a policy of obtaining compliance with Housing and Building Codes rather than seeking the imposition of fines for violations of such codes; and WHEREAS, this policy,has been abused by owners, managers, and tenants of buildings who have chosen to ignore warnings and citations; and have shown disregard and contempt for Evanston's codes and Circuit Court by their continued refusal to comply with said codes despite the courtesy and patience extended to them by the Property Standards Division and the Court; and WHEREAS, this policy has allowed these property owners and managers to profit while denying their tenants dwelling units which comply with the minimum standards of the Evanston Housing Code; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Evanston.City Council that said Council does hereby direct the Corporation Counsel to take al;l possible and appropriate action to vigorously prosecute owners and managers and tenants of rental property consisting of 0, multiple -family dwellingsr who willfully fail to correct Hqusi�o Code violations with -all deliberate speed, and 13- PR- 74 -2- BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, in order to improve the level of compliance and to prevent deterioration of housing within the City: 1. The Corporation Counsel, take all possible steps to expedite the service of process concerning Housing Code vio- lations; 2. 'rlie Co►.poratioa. The Corporation Counsel exhort the Court to impose fines commensurate with the nature of the offenses and which reflect both the remedial effort already expended by the City prior to Court action and the policy of the City to insure adequate housing for its citizens. The City Manager is hereby directed to deliver a copy of this Resolution to the Presiding Judge of the Second Municipal District of the Circuit Court of -Cook County and to the Sheriff of Cook County and to seek their cooperation and assistance in pursuance of this policy. ~ ...
