WHEREAS, the U. S. Department of Agriculture has announced a
change in the food stamp program that will raise the cost of food stamps
significantly; and
WHEREAS, the persons living on minimum incomes can least
afford a heavier financial burden in this inflated economy; and
WHEREAS, the City of Evanston has always responded to the
health and nutritional needs of its citizens, the increased cost of
food stamps will create a further and more difficult burden for the
local community to support:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the
City of Evanston objects strongly to the increased cost of food stamps
for poor people, and requests a re-evaluation of where savings can be
made so that local governments are not forced to assume burdens their
tax structure does not provide for.
