Upon the Occasion of the
Death of Robert E. James
WHEREAS, Robert E. James departed this life on December 26,
1974; and
WHEREAS, Robert E. James served as Alderman of the Fourth
Ward of the City of Evanston during the years 1922 to 1925, 1931
to 1933, and continuously from 1934 to 1961; and
WHEREAS, during his term as alderman, he served on various
committees of the City Council as member or chairman of Commit-
tees on Police, Streets, Parks, Audit, Judiciary, Printing, Sew-
ers, Zoning, Lighting, Fire, Local Improvements, Public Buildings
and Municipal Services; and
WHEREAS, he was especially interested in the development of
recreational facilities within the City, and led City action to-
ward the purchase of property for use as a public park, which
park now bears his name, James Park; and
WHEREAS, he was a resident of the City of Evanston for ap-
proximately 80.years; and
WHEREAS, Robert E. James was known as the dean of the City
Council in view of his long tenure in office; and
WHEREAS, Evanston citizens deeply appreciate his interest in
serving the citizens of his Ward as well as the citizens of the
entire City, giving most liberally of his time, energy and abili-
ties; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City Council of the City of
Evanston to pay tribute to Robert E. James;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE CITY
COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON, on behalf of ourselves, the
Mayor, the City Manager, the officials and all citizens of this
community, that we express our profound regret upon the occasion

of the death of Robert E. James, and tender to the bereaved mem-
bers of his family our heartfelt sympathy;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be made a part of
the permanent records of the City, and that a suitable copy there-
of, signed by the Mayor and attested by the City Clerk, be sent to
the members of his bereaved family.
