A RESOLUTION

Supporting Passage of House Bill 1838 ;
iWHEREAS, currently pending before the House Committee on Environment,

;!Energy, and Natural Resources of the Seventy-ninth Illinois General Assembly !
!jis House Bill 1838, which calls for a mandatory deposit on all beverage
containers sold in this State; and
WHEREAS, adoption of this legislation by the General Assembly can be
,,expected to result in reduced volumes of solid waste, thereby reducing the
i
,,amounts of time, effort, money, and'land needed to deal with this problem; and
!
!
flWHEREAS, adoption of this legislation by the General Assembly can also
i,be expected to result in significant reductions of roadside litter; and
ti
;
i WHEREAS, the indiscriminate disposal of glass and pull -tops from cans
i;has resulted in a health hazard on our beaches, parks, and playgrounds; and
, WHEREAS, soft drinks or beer have been found to be about 30 per cent less
`expensive in returnable bottles than in non -returnable cans; and
WHEREAS, a return to refillable bottles can be expected to result in
€
energy savings; and
! WHEREAS, a return to refillables may result in an over-all increase in
employment;
BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Evanston that it supports
r
.passage of House Bill 1838 or similar legislation, which would make mandatory
a deposit on all beverage containers sold in the State of Illinois.
