Northwestern
WHEREAS,
January 28 marks the 125th Anniversary of
•
University, its
charter as one of the initial major, independent univer-
sities in the old Northwest Territory, having been granted by the Illinois
State Legislature on that date in 1851; and
WHEREAS, from its first class with ten students and, two faculty
in one Evanston campus building, Northwestern University now numbers
13,800 full-time students, 1,238 full-time faculty, 161 buildings, and
120,000 living alumni throughout this country and the world; and
WHEREAS, originally teaching only the liberal arts, Northwestern
University pioneered in the establishment of professional schools in
medicine, law, speech, dentistry, music, management, engineering,
journalism, and education; and
Whereas, in appreciation of the inestimable value to the city,
state, and nation of Northwestern's contributions to science, engineer-
ing and technology, commerce and industry, the health sciences, law,
40 justice, law enforcement, the fine and performing arts, the humanities,
the social sciences, journalism, broadcasting and communications, to
education and teaching, to transportation, religion, and undoubtedly,
at least tangentially, to most worthy human endeavor; and
WHEREAS, Northwestern University has so nobly advanced the cause
of its founding, having become an international center of education and
scholarship, far exceeding its original regional purposes; and in antici-
pation of the results of its continuing challenge to new intellectual
frontiers:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City
of Evanston, that it wishes to extend its congratulations to the Univer-
sity on this 125th Anniversary/
