HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1963-010-R-63135 10-R-63 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, House Bill 189 would establish a minimum salary of $500 per month for policemen in Illinois municipalities with 75,000 or, more inhabitants but less than 150,000 inhabitants; and WHEREAS, House Bill 190 would establish a minimum salary of $500 per month for firemen in Illinois Municipalities with 75,000 or more inhabitants but less than 2003000 inhabitants; and WHEREAS, the General Assembly should limit itself to establishing minimum wage requirements that are necessary to guarantee all workers a subsist- ence level and should, in accordance with the home rule principle, rely on elected local officials to make necessary and proper decisions on salaries and • working conditions for municipal employees; and WHEREAS, labor market conditions, wage levels, the cost -of -living, and municipal financial capacities vary considerably in the various Illinois municipalities that would be affected by the $500 per month minimum salary re- quirements, and House Bills 189 and 190 do not take these variations into account; and WHEREAS, Evanston and other Illinois municipalities already face difficult financial problems, and the enactment of House Bills 189 and 190 would raise costs and taxes and thereby intensify these problems; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Evanston, Illinois, hereby declaresits opposition to the passage of House Bills 189 and 190 and any other bills having essentially the same effect that may be introduced; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City Manager are hereby 0 authorized and requested to transmit a copy of this resolution to Governor Otto .
