HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1965-028-R-654 28-R-65 RESOLUTION WHEREAS, House Bill 619, as amended, would establish a minisi:um salary of $550 per month for policemen and firemen in Illinois municipalities with 75,000 or more inhabitants but less than 150,000 inhabitants; and WHEREAS, House Bill 1358 would establish a minimum salary of $500 per month for all public works employees in Illinois municipalities with 75,000 or more inhabitants; and • WHEREAS, the General Assembly should limit itself to establishing minimum wage requirements that are necessary to guarantee all workers a subsistence level and should, in accordance with the home rule principle, rely on elected local officials to make reasonable and proper decisions on salaries and working conditions for municipalities; and WHEREAS, labor market conditions, wage levels, the cost -of -living, and municipal financial capacities vary considerably in the municipalities located'in various sections of Illinois that would be affected by the proposed minimum salary requirements, and house Bills 619 and 1358 do not take these variations into account; and WHEREAS, Evanston and other Illinois municipalities already face difficult financial problems, and the enactment of House Bills 619 and 1358 would intensify Evanston's problem by raising payroll and fringe benefit costs approximately $175,000 per year: 33 -2- N.W, THEREFORE, EE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Evanston, Illinois, hereby declares its opposition to the enactment of House Bills 619 and 1358 and any other bills having essentially the same effect that may be considered by the General Assembly; and' BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City Council are hereby authorized and directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to Governor Otto Kerner and to each member of the Illinois General Assembly, and to take all other practicable steps, in cooperation with the Illinois Municipal League, to encourage defeat of House Bills 619 and 1358 and any similar bills.
