HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1965-027-R-65• 17J ! b0 4 27-9-65 R E S O L U T I O N YMEREAS, it is well known that there has existed for many years within the State of Illinois a practice on the part of many citizens to discriminate against their fellow citizens in the sale and lease of housing on the basis of race, color, creed, or national origin; and WHEREAS, the denial of adequate housing opportunity to many of the citizens of this State has been a matter of concern, and has been productive of social evils which ought to be alle- viated as promptly as possible; and MEREAS, it is desirable, consistent with the national traditions of freedom of our country, that, in connection with the correction of this condition, a program of education, concil- iation, and mediation be undertaken by an agency of the State of Illinois: NO',,V, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Evanston, that the members of the 74th General Assembly be and they hereby are urged to adopt legislation to reflect the following: 1. This City Council disapproves and rejects the provi- sions of any bill before the 74th General Assembly which would abridge the freedom of a property owner to make the final decision as to the person or persons to whom he will sell or rent his property or any portion thereof. 2. This City Council favors a measure which would forbid real estate brokers, their agents, and employees from tal:irig any independent action to discriminate against any person on the basis of race, creed, color, or national origin in the sale or .• �.+�. va �.%,''ie.�vttc..Lecl lEcil G�l.d6�• 31 3. This City Council favors a measure to forbid lenders of money for the purchase or mortgaging of residential real estate from discriminating against any person solely on the basis of race, creed, color, or national origin and apart from any financial considerations, in the lending of funds. 4. This City Council favors a measure to create a Commission on Human Relations, adequately staffed and financed to assure the aggressive exercise of the powers and the effective performance of the duties described in Section 4 of House Bill No. 1247, presently pending before the 74th General Assembly.
