HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1965-013-R-65l 0 _ RESOLUTION 0 -R-65 WHEREAS, State Representatives Moran, Thiem, Katz, Kennedy, Dawson, and Johnson, all from the former Seventh Representative District, have introduced House Bill No. 572 and House Bill 573; and WHEREAS, these bills would permit the electors in the City of Evanston (and other Cook County municipalities where the municipality and related township boundaries are coextensive) to decide by referendum that the City Council shall become the corporate authority of the town- ship and that all township functions shall be performed by the City; and WHEREAS, the Evanston electors attending the Town Meeting on April 7, 196L, adopted a motion that the proposal to transfer functions of the Town be subject to study by the City Council "with a clear cut proposal to be offered to the State Legislature"; and WHEREAS, the power that would be granted to Evanston by House Bills 572 and 573 is a permissive grant of power that can be used at any time, but only if the City Council votes to put the proposition on a ballot and a majority of the voters vote in favor of the proposition; and WHEREAS, further study would be required to determine whether it would be desirable to transfer to the City of Evanston the powers and functions of the Township of the City of Evanston, but it is clearly de- sirable that the City Council and electors have the power and means to decide this important question of governmental structure in this community NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Evanston, Illinois, that it hereby urgesthe 74th Illinois General Assembly to enact into law House Bill No. 572 and House Bill No. 573; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Manager be and hereby is authorized and directed to transmit certified copies of this resolution to the sponsors of these bills and other appropriate members of the Illinois General Assembly.
