WHEREAS, it is well }mown that there has existed for many years
throughout the United State3 a practice'on the part of many citizens to
discriminate against their follow citizens in the sale and renting of
housing on the basis of race, color, religion, or national origin; and
WHEREAS, the denial of adequate housing opportunity to many of
the citizens of.this.Nation has been a matter of grave concern, and has
been productive of social evils which ought to be alleviated as promptly
as possible; and
WHEREAS, it is consistent with American traditions of freedom and
urgently necessary that the laws and public policies of the United States
• prohibit housing discrimination, and that programs of education and con-
ciliation be undertaken by an agency of the United States to achieve hous-
ing freedom for all citizens;
NOW, MREF'ORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Evanston, Illinois, that the members of the Lhiited States House of Repre-
sentatives, 90th Congress, be and they hereby are urged to adopt Title VIII
and Title IX of H. R. 2516, which would prevent property owners, in selling
or renting housing, from discriminating against any person on the basis of
race, color, religion, or national origin.
