HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1968-007-R-68• R E S O L U T I O N 7-R-68 J� WHEREAS, throughout recorded time men have hoped and worked for freedom, equality, justice, and tranquility, and in recent years it was the persistent, persuasive voice of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., speaking most eloquently for civil rights, that was heard in this land and all the world; and WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. espoused and practiced his philosophy of nonviolence in all his work and leadership, believing that moral ends should be achieved by moral means, and that social change can best be achieved by aggressive use of appeals to conscience, demonstrations of suffering, and all legal means; and WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis on April 4, 1968: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Evanston, Illinois, does hereby record total abhorrence of the terrible act which caused the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and does mourn his tragic and untimely passing; AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. must be continued and his philosophy of nonviolence must prevail, so every American and every citizen of Evanston, as a fitting memorial to Dr. King, should pledge himself to speed the day when equal rights and op- portunities are achieved for all Americans and all mankind is united in brotherly love. „ J ATTESTS zrk� City >r
