HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-1969-013-R-69c� 13=R-69 R E S O L U T I O N Urging Enactment of House Bills 525 and 526 "' G 3 WHEREAS, House Bill 525, now under consideration by the Illinois Gen- eral Assembly, would authorize Illinois municipalities to levy a property tax of not to exceed .15% for police protection, and House Bill 526 would authorize a similar .15% tax for fire protection, and both of these levies would be available by action of the corporate authorities; and WHEREAS, the City of Evanston's police and fire payrolls have risen 35% during the past three years because of inflation, State minimum wage laws for policemen and firemen, and conditions in our society that have re- quired the strengthening of protective forces; and WHEREAS, Evanston already imposes the municipal sales tax and utility tax at the maximum rates authorized by Illinois lace, and its 1969 general corporate tax rate is approaching the upper limit authorized by Illinois law= and WHEREAS, Evanston therefore needs additional taxing authority to ensure that it will be able, in the face of rising wages and prices, to maintain present services and an adequate level of capital expenditures: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Evanston, Illinois, that the members of the 76th Illinois General Assembly be and they hereby are urged to enact House Bills 525 and 526 into law so as to increase the property taxing authority of Illinois municipalities for police and fire protection purposes; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City Manager are hereby authorized and requested to transmit copies of this resolution to Senator Arrington, Representative Dawson, Representative Johnston, Representative Katz, and members of the Senate and House Committees considering House Bills 525 and 526, and to take other appropriate steps, in cooperation with the Illinois Municipal league, to urge the enactment of said bills.
