Gaynor, Parks/Forestry & Recreation Director Others Present: Consent Agenda Mr. Lesch called the meeting to order at 7:00pm. Comments from Observers None. Ill. Proposed Honorary Street Name Sign (Ann Jennett) honoring Ann Jennett. Mr. Lesch gave a brief overview of the Honorary Street Name Sign application submitted by Alderman Steven Bernstein In honor of Ann Jennett. They are proposing to designate the portion of Church Street, between Ridge and Oak, with an honorary street name sign. Ann Jennett was a job specialist and career counselor at Evanston Township High School for eight years. In August 1983, she founded the Youth Job Center of Evanston, Inc. to provide employment opportunities for disadvantaged young people, in response to a community need for help for an underserved and needy population. The Youth Job Center serves over one thousand one hundred youth annually; 78% which are from tow income families and 89% which are minorities. She has opened many doors for minorities to better paying and more visible jobs. Ann has served as Director of the Youth Job Center from its inception to the present, overseeing the daily operations of the center and is responsible for raising its half million dollar annual budget. ACTION -The motion to forward the Honorary Street Sign Name application for'Ann Jannett" to the Planning and Development Committee with a recommendation of approval was seconded and approved. IV. Consider Resolution 52-R-01, allowing an honorary street sign name to be displayed for a four-yoar term. The committee was asked to evaluate the length of time an honorary street name sign should be displayed. The current resolution (39-R-96) provides for a two-year term and a second two-year term at the conclusion of the first term, if requested. The committee reviewed the proposed resolution 52-R-01, which would allow an honorary street name sign to be displayed for a four-year term. After discussion the committee recommended approving the proposed resolution allowing honorary street name signs to be dLsplayed for a four-year term and to remove the two-year term and two-year extension language. Honorary street name signs currently displayed will be grandfathered in, to the extent that each honorary sign shall be displayed for a total of four years and then removed. ACTION - The motion to forward the recommendation of extending the length of time an honorary street name sign can be displayed to four years. to the Planning and Development Committee was seconded and approved. V. Consider reinstalling the honorary street name sign "Jack Korshak Avenue". The committee was asked to consider reinstalling the honorary street name sign'Jack Korshak Avenue'. If City Council accepts the proposed resolution 52-R-01, the honorary street name sign will be grandfathered in and will be removed at the end of a total of four years. If not, the committee unanimously recommends that the honorary street name sign 'Jack Korshak" be reinstalled based on the language in the current resolution. Proposed Honorary Street Name Sign (Ed Gold) honoring Ed Gold. Mr. Marberry gave a brief overview of the Honorary Street Name Sign application submitted by Alderman Ann Rainey in honor of Ed Gold. She is proposing to designate the portions of Mulford Street, between Wesley and Ashland, with an honorary street name sign. Ed Gold has lived in his home on Mulford Street for over 50 years. For more than 60 years following his graduation from Temple University as a journalism major, he has devoted his life to communication, writing, editing and photography. He has chronicled activity in the Mulford neighborhood area, including wildlife in and around Leah Lomar Park, through photographs since the 1950's. Ed has been a volunteer teacher's helper at Dawes School since 1977 and he will be remembered by many as a fixture on the park bench in Leah Lamar Park next to his home. ACTION - The motion to forward the Honorary Street Sign Name application for "Ed Gold" to the Planning and Development Committee with a recommendation of approval vras seconded and approved. Ill. Proposed Honorary Street Name Sign (Byrne Piven) honoring Delores Bryne Piven. Mr. Lesch gave a brief overview of the Honorary Street Name Sign application submitted by Alderman Stephen Engleman and Jennifer Sultz, in honor of Byrne Piven. They are proposing to designate the portion of Noyes Street, between Ridge and Noyes Court, with an honorary street name sign. Byrne Piven, Co -Founder and Artist Director of the Piven Theatre Workshop, created an organization that has flourished in Evanston for thirty years, growing into a nationally acclaimed actor training center for children and adults, a subscription theatre and a center for numerous outreach programs. Byrne has championed extensive programming for the underserved at the Piven Theatre Workshop. The Piven Theatre Workshop has granted scholarships to Evanston children, donated free tickets to Evanston organizations and created business partnerships with other Evanston businesses. Byrne and his wife Joyce have received many awards including the Evanston Arts Council Youth and Education Award, the Evanston Mayors Award of the Arts, the Chicago Drama League's Crystal Award, and the University of Chicago's Glorious Gargoyle Award for lifetime contribution to the theatre. In 2000 he and his wife were honored with a Joseph Jefferson Award for lifetime achievement. ACTION - The motion to forward the Honorary Street Sign Name application for "Byrne Piven' to the Planning and Development Committee with a recommendation of approval was seconded and approved. Gaynor, Parks/Forestry & Recreation Director Others Present: I. Consent Agenda Mr. Marberry called the meeting to order at 7:10pm. it. Comments from Observers None. Ill. Proposed Honorary Street Name Sign (Fountain Square Veterans Memorial Plaza) honoring Evanston's Gold Star Veterans. Mr. Marberry gave a brief overview of the Honorary Street Name Sign application submitted by Alderman Arthur Newman and Robert Lawson. in honor of Evanston's 351 Gold Star Veterans. They are proposing to designate the portions of Davis Street, Sherman Ave, and Orrington Ave (abutting Fountain Square) with an honorary street name sign. The Gold Star Veterans gave their lives in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War 1, World War 11. The Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Conflict. The sacrifice of the lives of these 351 Evanston Veterans to preserve all that this nation stands for, exemplifies their concern to improve the welfare and happiness of all residents of Evanston. Many of the veterans were graduates of Evanston Schools and have relatives and friends that currently reside in Evanston. ACTION - The motion to forward the Honorary Street Sign Name application far "Fountain Square Veterans Memorial Plaza" to the Planning and Development Committee with a recommendation of approval was seconded and approved. IV. Proposed Honorary Street Name Sign (Delores A. Holmes Avenue) honoring Delores A. Holmes. Mr. Marberry gave a brief overview of the Honorary Street Sign Name application submitted by Alderman .foe Kent, in honor of Delores Holmes. They are proposing to designate the portion of McDaniel Avenue from Church Street to Lyons Street, with an honorary street name sign. Ms Holmes has been an advocate for strengthening families for over 26 year. In 1976 Ms. Holmes was the parent coordinator for Project Head Start throughout the suburban Cook Count and worked very closely with the Evanston Head Start program. In 1979 she opened the first Family Focus Our Place, specifically for pregnant and parenting teens, where she served as Director 26 years. During this time she expanded programs at Family Focus to include alternatives for youth involved in gangs and created a unique tutoring program for 7- and Bl" grade students. She has worked with numerous Evanston agencies to broaden and enhance her vision for children and families, such as Peer Services, Literacy for Us, Foster Reading Center, Fleetwood Jourdain Theater Program and many more. In 1993 she received the "As They Grow Award" from Parents Magazine; an honor given to only six Americans each year. Ms. Holmes' commitment to the children of Evanston seems endless as she continues to stress the need for a work ethic and academic advancement. ACTION - The motion to forward the Honorary Street Sign Name application for "Delores A. Holmes Avenue" to the Planning and Development Committee with a recommendation of approval was seconded and approved. V. Proposed Honorary Street Name Sign (Bill Hannan Drive) honoring Bill Hannan. Mr. Marberry gave a brief overview of the Honorary Street Sign Name application submitted by Alderman Lionel Jean Baptiste and Mora Hannan Okrim, in honor of William Hannan. They are proposing to designate the pofbon of Wesley Ave, between Grove Street and Elinor Place, with an honorary street name sign. William "Bill" Hannan was the principal of Dewey School for 19 years. In 1967, he was involved in the desegregation of District 65. Dewey School was one of the only schools that was most integrated. He was active in the Dewey Community Conference and was an integral part in keeping the Dewey School open and recognized the strength of Dewey School in the cultural backgrounds of the parents. ACTION - The motion to forward the Honorary Street Sign Name application for "Bill Hannan Drive" to the Planning and Development Committee with a recommendation of approval was seconded and approved.
