AN ORDINANCE
Amending Title 3, Section 3-2-1 6-2(A) of the Evanston City Code to Increase
the Parking Tax in Municipal Parking Garages
WHEREAS, the parkers in City -owned parking garages currently pay
the same tax as other parkers in the Parking System; and
WHEREAS, these facilities have much higher maintenance and
operating costs than surface parking lots; and
WHEREAS, these facilities also carry a significantly higher debt service
cost than surface lots; and
WHEREAS, the City of Evanston has the ability to recover these higher
than average maintenance, operating, and debt service costs through the
imposition of a parking tax at a rate different from the rate associated with
• surface parking lots;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
Section 1: That Title 3, Section 3-2-16-2 (A) be amended to read as
follows:
There is hereby levied and imposed upon the use and privilege of parking
a motor vehicle in or upon any "parking lot, parking 4rea, or garage", as
defined in this Section 3-2-16, in the City, a tax of forty cents ($0.40) for
each motor vehicle parked in or on each parking lot, parking area, or
garage for every twenty four (24) hour period or any fraction thereof. If a
motor vehicle is parked in or on a parking lot, parking area, or garage for
which a charge is made on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual basis,
the amount of tax shall be two dollars ($2.00) per week, eight dollars
($8.00) per month, twenty four dollars ($24.00) per quarter, or ninety six
dollars ($96.00) per year. The weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual tax
shall not be increased or decreased on account of Saturdays, Sundays,
or legal holidays failing within such weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual
period, whether or not the motor vehicle is actually parked in or on said
parking lot, parking area, or garage on such days. EXCEPTION: The
• parking tax on monthly permits in City -owned parking garages shall be
thirteen dollars ($13.00) per month.

SECTION 2: That all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict
herewith are hereby repealed.
SECTION 3: That this ordinance shall be in full force and effect from
and after its passage, approval, and publication in the manner provided by
law.
