HomeMy WebLinkAboutORDINANCES-2001-120-O-0112/5/01 • 120-0-01 AN ORDINANCE Granting Evanston Landmark Status To the Property at 641 Sheridan Square WHEREAS, among the purposes of the Historic Preservation Ordinance ("The Ordinance"), Title 2, Chapter 9 of the City Code is that in Section 2-9-1(A) to identify, preserve, protect, enhance, and encourage the continued utilization and rehabilitation of areas, properties, structures, sites and objects having a special historical, community, architectural, or aesthetic interest or value to the City of Evanston and its citizens; and WHEREAS, the designation of certain properties as Landmarks is a means of • accomplishing the aforesaid purposes; and WHEREAS, Section 2-9-3 (G) (1) of the Ordinance charges the Preservation Commission with investigating and making recommendations to the City Council or its duly authorized Committee concerning the adoption of ordinances designating areas, properties, structures, sites and objects as Landmarks and Districts; and WHEREAS, Section 2-9-5 of the Ordinance sets forth the process whereby the Preservation Commission shall nominate, consider, and designate Landmarks and Districts; and WHEREAS, Paul M. Lurie, the owner of 641 Sheridan Square, applied for the designation of that property as an Evanston Landmark; and 12/5/01 WHEREAS, 641 Sheridan Square is improved with a rectangular one-story flat • roof Modern style house, built with brick, glass and steel, designed by James L. Nagle, architect and built in 1974, and WHEREAS, a public hearing was held pursuant to proper notice on September 25, 2001, regarding the said application, pursuant to Section 2-9-5(C) of the Ordinance; and WHEREAS, the Preservation Commission adopted a Resolution "Requesting the City Manager to Transmit The Evanston Preservation Commission's Recommendation and Report That the City Council Designate 641 Sheridan Square As an Evanston Landmark" on October 16, 2001, and WHEREAS, the Preservation Commission after taking testimony, receiving other evidence and making a written record, found that the aforesaid property at 641 • Sheridan Square met one or more of the criteria in Section 2-9-4 of the Ordinance for designation as an Evanston Landmark; and WHEREAS, the Preservation Commission voted to recommend that the City Council grant Evanston Landmark designation to said property at 641 Sheridan Square, and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS: Section 1: The above recitals are found as fact and made a part hereof. Section 2: The findings, testimony and other evidence of record with • 2 12/5/01 respect to 641 Sheridan Square, of the Preservation Commission at its September 25, 2.001 meeting, are hereby adopted by the City Council. Section 3: The City Council adopts the recommendation of the Preservation Commission and grants Evanston Landmark status to the aforesaid property, 641 Sheridan Square. Section 4: All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed. Section 5: This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage, approval, and publication in the manner provided by law.
