HomeMy WebLinkAboutORDINANCES-2002-105-O-02• 10/17/2002 105-0-02 AN ORDINANCE Amending Section 3-19-5-1 of the Evanston City Code Pertaining to Telephone Service and Dispatching WHEREAS, the current Evanston City Code requires every taxicab licensee to operate and maintain, or be a member of an association which operates or maintains within the City of Evanston, an office which provides a Federal Communications Commission licensed commercial two-way radio system between such office and each licensed taxicab; and WHEREAS, many technological advances regarding taxicab dispatching have • occurred in the last several years; and WHEREAS, many taxicabs are utilizing Global Positioning by Satellite ("GPS") communication as well as computer database dispatching, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS: SECTION 1: That Section 3-19-5-1 of the Evanston City Code, 1979, as amended, is further amended by deleting the current section in its entirety and substituting in lieu thereof the following new subsection: 3-19-5-1: TELEPHONE/RADIO SERVICE OR GLOBAL POSITIONING BY SATELLITE ("GPS") COMPUTERIZED SERVICE REQUIRED: Every taxicab licensee shall operate and maintain, or shall be a member of an association which operates and maintains, within the City an office or 105-0-02 principal place of business which provides twenty-four (24) hour per day telephone service. Such licensee or association of licensees shall maintain a listing of the taxi service business in the local telephone directory and provide twenty-four (24) hour daily, continuous service. Each licensee or association shall provide dispatching service, as follows: (A) By a Federal Communications Commission licensed commercial two- way radio system between such office and each licensed taxicab; or (B) By associating with a company capable of providing Global Positioning via Satellite ("GPS")/Computerized Based Dispatching Service. The GPS/computer based dispatching company is not required to possess an address within the City of Evanston. All phone requests shall be routed through the Evanston local phone number and forwarded to the GPS/computer dispatching company switchboard. SECTION 2: That all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed. • SECTION 3: That this ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage, approval, and publication in the manner provided by law.
