HomeMy WebLinkAboutORDINANCES-2003-047-O-03• 04/29/2003 47-0-03 AN ORDINANCE Amending Sections 4-12-6 and 4-12-10 of the City Code Pertaining to the Regulation of Real Estate Signs and Awnings WHEREAS, the Sign Review and Appeals Board has recommended that various amendments be made to the City's Sign Ordinance; and WHEREAS, the City Council believes it is in the best interest of the citizens of Evanston to make said amendments, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS: • SECTION 1: That Section 4-12-6 (T) of the Evanston City Code, 1979, as amended, is further amended by deleting subsection (T) in its entirety and substituting in lieu thereof the following new subsection (T): 4-12-6: EXEMPT SIGNS: (T) Real Estate Sign: One real estate sign per street frontage of a premises, advertising the availability of a sale or lease of that premises. Such signs may not be located in the public right of way, nor be directly illuminated. They shall not exceed six (6) square feet for residential districts, twenty-four (24) square feet for commercial districts, or forty eight (48) square feet for industrial districts. Display of real estate signs shall be limited to one hundred eighty (180) days. For non-exempt real estate signs see Section 4-12-10 (L): Temporary Real Estate Signs. SECTION 2: That Section 4-12-10 of the Evanston City Code, 1979, as amended, is further amended by deleting subsection 4-12-10 (A) (2) in its entirety and substituting in • lieu thereof the following new subsection: 47-0-03 • 4-12-10: PERMITTED SIGN TYPES: (A) Wall Signs: 2. Area: The total permitted sign surface area of all wall signs on a fagade shall not exceed ten percent (10%) of eligible fagade area. No individual wall sign shall exceed one hundred and twenty-five (125) square feet in area. SECTION 3: That Section 4-12-10 of the Evanston City Code, 1979, as amended, is hereby further amended by deleting subsection 4-12-10 (F) (3) in its entirety and substituting in lieu thereof the following new subsection: 4-12-10: PERMITTED SIGN TYPES: (F) Canopy and Awning Signs: 3. Location: Canopies and awnings shall be constructed and erected so that the lowest portion of the projecting frame thereof shall be not less than seven feet six inches (7' 6"), and the lowest portion of the descending skirt shall be • not less than six feet eight inches (6' 8") above the level of the sidewalk or public thoroughfare. No portion of the canopy or awning sign shall be extended above or beyond the canopy or awning upon which it is attached; however, signs may be hung beneath canopies parallel to the building frontage so long as they do not descend below the minimum six foot eight inch (6' 8") minimum clearance. Awnings shall project a minimum of thirty six inches (36") out from the building upon which they are attached, and a maximum of twenty-four inches (24") from the vertical surface of the street curb line. SECTION 4: That Section 4-12-10 of the Evanston City Code, 1979, as amended, is hereby further amended by adding the following new subsection: -2- :7 47-0-03 4-12-10: PERMITTED SIGN TYPES: (L) Temporary Real Estate Signs: For temporary, non -illuminated real estate signs for multi -family, residential projects, the permitted regulations are as follows: 5 to 36 Dwelling Units = 32 SF maximum, 10'-0" maximum sign height All Temporary Real Estate Signs shall be limited to a maximum of 12 months total duration, or until all the units are sold. SECTION 5: That all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed.
