X HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS:
Dorothy Headd, or "Miss Dorothy" as she is affectionately known, is an everyday
hero that deserves the recognition from the Evanston community to which she has so
selflessly contributed. In addition to being an active member of the Environmental
Justice Committee from its inception and volunteering her time at local churches, soup
kitchens, neighborhood watch groups, and teaching Sunday school to young children,
Miss Dorothy has been a beloved crossing guard) on the corner of Grant Street and
Prairie Avenue, in front of Kingsley Elementary School. She not only ensured the safety
of families as they walked to and from school each day, but also made a point to learn
something about each child. She memorized every child's name who walked through
her crosswalk. She wore a contagious smile and made sure she got a smile out of
everyone whom she met. She made every child feel that they belonged at Kingsley
Elementary School. To many of the children, she was not just a crossing guard, she
was someone that they viewed as a grandmother that they were fortunate enough to
see five days a week, whether it was sunny, raining, or snowing. Miss Dorothy is an
Evanstonian that takes pride in her opportunity to connect with others in her community.
Before retiring from her role as a crossing guard in 2020, she made the intersection of
Grant Street and Prairie Avenue hers. Now it is time for Evanston to honor her and her
contributions with an Honorary Street Name Sign recognizing her passion and
commitment to every child, every day. Thank you for your time and thoughtful
consideration of Dorothy Headd for an Honorary Street Name Sign.
