HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS-2011-047-R-11r� U 7/28/2011 47-R-11 A RESOLUTION Designating that Portion of Emerson Street between Maple Avenue and Oak Avenue with the Honorary Street Name Sign, "Emerson Branch YMCA" WHEREAS, from 1909 until its closing in 1969, the Emerson Street Branch YMCA was a pillar of Evanston's African American community; and WHEREAS, the Emerson Street Branch YMCA served Evanston's African American community when similar facilities denied them access on the basis of racial segregation; and WHEREAS, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Ralph Bunche frequented the • Emerson Street Branch YMCA and singer -songwriter Nat King Cole performed at the Emerson Street Branch YMCA; and WHEREAS, the effects of the loss of the Emerson Street Branch YMCA are still felt today, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS: SECTION 1: That the foregoing recitals are hereby found as fact and incorporated herein by reference. SECTION 2: That, on behalf of the entire citizenry of the City of Evanston, the City Council hereby expresses appreciation for the Emerson Street Branch YMCA by designating that portion of Emerson Street between Maple Avenue and Oak Avenue, • "Emerson Branch YMCA." 47-R-11 SECTION 3: That this Resolution 47-R-11 shall be in full force and effect • from and after the date of its passage and approval in the manner provided by law.
