A RESOLUTION
Designating that Portion of Dempster Street
between Ridge Avenue and Asbury Avenue with
the Honorary Street Name Sign, "Rabbi Peter Knobel Way"
WHEREAS, for thirty years Rabbi Peter S. Knobel has cultivated social
growth and inspired change both within the congregation of Beth Emet ("the Free
Synagogue") and in the larger community of the City of Evanston; and
WHEREAS, Rabbi Knobel's lifelong advocacy of social action was
demonstrated during the mid 1980s by moving Beth Emet towards being a Sanctuary
synagogue; and
• WHEREAS, Rabbi Knobel's spirited leadership allowed Beth Emet to
become one of the first "nuclear free" congregations as part of the City of Evanston's
initiative to become a nuclear free zone; and
WHEREAS, Rabbi Knobel is a founding member of such community
organizations as the Evanston Housing Coalition and the Interfaith Housing Action
Center; and
WHEREAS, Rabbi Knobel has participated as a member on the Illinois
State's Attorney's Task Force, "Foregoing Life Sustaining Treatment," emphasizing
health, healing, death and dying; and
WHEREAS, in 2003 Rabbi Knobel developed a Soup Kitchen at Beth
Emet feeding more than one hundred of Evanston's poor and homeless .each
Wednesday evening.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOL( COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
SECTION 1: That the foregoing recitals are hereby found as fact and
made a part hereof.
SECTION 2: That, on behalf of the entire citizenry of the City of Evanston,
appreciation is hereby expressed to Rabbi Peter S. Knobel's thirty years of service at
Beth Emet, as well as his vital contributions to the social and spiritual life of the City, by
designating that portion of Dempster Street between Ridge Avenue and Asbury Avenue,
"Rabbi Peter Knobel Way."
SECTION 3: That ,this Resolution 32-R-09 shall be in full force and effect
from and after the date of its passage and approval in the manner provided by law..
