Drummer (Deceased) for His Work for the Community WHEREAS, the members of the 77th City Council of Evanston, Illinois are honored to recognize milestone events in the lives of the citizens of Evanston; and WHEREAS, the late Alderman Dennis R. Drummer had been an active City of Evanston community member and served as Alderman of the 2nd Ward during the years 1984 through 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, Alderman Dennis R. Drummer had served the City of Evanston, Illinois as a successful businessman, a respected community leader; and WHEREAS, after serving in Vietnam as a Sergeant in the United States Army, .Dennis R. Drummer moved to the Evanston area where he opened a drapery business at Lake Street and Ashland Avenue in 1975; behind his business was a corner grocery which became a safe haven for many school children; it was there that he began his involvement with the community, primarily a role -model type relationship with the children; these experiences led him to COE-POPS, a youth mentoring organization, and helped him as an Alderman when gang and drug activities cropped up in parts of the 2nd Ward in sthe early 1990 s, and 37-R-09 WHEREAS, in 1984, then -Mayor Jay Lytle appointed Dennis R. Drummer to fill a mid-term aldermanic vacancy; Alderman Drummer intended only to complete the appointed term and serve one more term, however as problems developed in the 2nd Ward, he felt that he could not move on without tackling them first; and WHEREAS, as a small businessman, Alderman Drummer made his mark in the City Council where he dealt with many serious issues, one being the crime problems that had consumed the Evanston community and motivated Alderman Drummer to rally the neighborhood through marches and other gatherings, and interact with families of the problem makers in an effort to combat crime in the area; and WHEREAS, many of Alderman Drummers colleagues and observers saw him as the voice of compromise and reason in the City Council, applauded his independent way of thinking, and regarded him as a "statesman and a public servant of the highest order" due to his ability to leap beyond the specific matter and immediate consequences at hand and concentrate on the long-term best interest for the entire community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS: SECTION 1: That we honor Alderman Dennis R. Drummer for his seventeen years of dedication and service to the citizens of the 2nd Ward and all of Evanston. 0 -2- u • 37-R-09 SECTION 2: That this Resolution 37-R-09 be made a part of the permanent records of the City of Evanston and that a copy, executed by the Mayor and attested by the City Clerk, be sent to the family of Dennis R. Drummer. SECTION 3: That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after the date of its passage and approval in the manner provided by law. Mayor -3- 0 0
