A RESOLUTION
Authorizing the City Manager to Sign
A Fiscal Year 2005/06 Grant Application through the
Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation for Renovations to the
Baseball/Softball Field at Mason Park
WHEREAS, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation provides grants to support
grassroots youth baseball and softball in local communities and increases opportunities
for children and youth, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to: have
access to healthy out -of -school activities that teach baseball/softball skills; promote
physical fitness; celebrate individual, team and league accomplishments; and provide
an environment in which young people can learn teamwork, sportsmanship and a strong
0 work ethic while having fun in a positive environment; and
WHEREAS, a Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation Grant can be requested for the
renovation of existing public youth baseball/softball fields; and
WHEREAS, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation Grant operates with a dollar -
for -dollar match. The maximum grant request is $30,000 (thirty thousand and no/100
dollars); and
WHEREAS, the City's Parks/Forestry and Recreation Department will
submit a grant proposal for $16,000 (sixteen thousand and no/100 dollars) to renovate
the baseball/ softball field at Mason Park. The renovations will include earthwork and
grading, supplementation of the infield mix to conform with the proposed skinned infield
layout, integration
of calcine clay material
into the top 4"
of the infield to improve
recovery following
rain events, construction
of home plate
and batter's/catcher's box

areas, and seeding and hydro -mulching of all areas disturbed by construction. The total
project cost is $32,000 (thirty-two thousand and no/100 dollars). The City's match of
$16,000 (sixteen thousand and no/100 dollars) has been secured through the Open
Space Lands Acquisition and Development Grant Program; and
WHEREAS, the grant application must be submitted by October 15, 2005,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS:

SECTION 1: That the foregoing recitals are found as fact and made a
SECTION 2: That the City Manager is hereby authorized to sign the
application for the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation Grant to renovate the baseball/softball
field at Mason Park.
SECTION 3: That the City Manager is hereby authorized and directed to •
negotiate any additional terms and conditions of the grant as may be determined to be
in the best interests of the City.
SECTION 4: That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and
after its passage and approval in the manner rovided by law.
