A RESOLUTION
Supporting the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence
16th Annual Walk and Rally Against Handgun Violence
WHEREAS, 4,934 children under the age of twenty were hospitalized in Illinois
for gunshot wounds from 1992 through 1995 with hospital charges exceeding $69
million; and
WHEREAS, in 1995, 320 children died from gun violence in Illinois; and
WHEREAS, in 1994, gun trauma was the predominant cause of death for
Chicago youths ages 15 through 19 years old; and
• WHEREAS, in 1994, Illinois had the second highest number of youth gun
homicides in the United States; and
WHEREAS, in 1995, the average hospital cost for a gunshot wound for a youth
(0-19 years) was $15,688.00 with an average stay of five days in the hospital; and
WHEREAS, 25% of hospitalized gunshot patients (ages 0-19) between 1992-
1995 required intensive care admission, costing approximately $34,856.00 per patient;
and
WHEREAS, during 1994, almost one half of all youth murders involved
handguns; and
WHEREAS, 80% of the medical cost for treatment of firearm -related injuries is
• paid by taxpayers; and

WHEREAS, between 1986-1991, 92 of the 549 trauma care centers in the
United States closed due to financial costs of gun violence; and
WHEREAS, in 1995, 5,285 children ages 0-19 died from gun violence in the
United States; and
WHEREAS, the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence will hold its 16th
Annual Walk and Rally Against Handgun Violence on Saturday, October 3, 1998 at the
Daley Center Plaza at Washington and Dearborn,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
SECTION 1: That the City Council of the City of Evanston, on behalf of its.
citizens, supports the 16th Annual Walk and Rally Against Handgun Violence •
sponsored by the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.
SECTION 2: That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after
the date of its passage and approval in the manner provided by law.
