A RESOLUTION
Directing the City Manager to Develop a Plan with the "Save The
Cottage Association" and the Evanston Convention and Visitors
Bureau on Behalf of the City of Evanston regarding "The Cottage"
WHEREAS, the building known as "The Cottage" is currently located at 516
Dempster Street, Evanston, Illinois, and
WHEREAS, "The Cottage" was originally built as a Pure Oil service station, and
WHEREAS, the construction of "The Cottage" was designed by Evanston
architect, Carl A. Peterson, and patented in 1929, and
WHEREAS, the design of "The Cottage" was developed to create a service
is station that would blend in with residential neighborhoods, and the design is based
upon the likeness of an English cottage, and
WHEREAS, "The Cottage" is an excellent example of American roadside
architecture, and
WHEREAS, the preservation of "The Cottage" as a fine example of commercial
architecture is of importance to the City and all its residents, and
WHEREAS, "The Cottage" has numerous historical ties to the Evanston
community including, Evanstonian Henry Dawes, President of Pure Oil Company and
his wife Helen who was a founder of The Cradle in Evanston, and
WHEREAS, the owner of "The Cottage" intends to demolish the structure, and

WHEREAS, the Save the Cottage Association, a not -for -profit organization, has
been created for the purpose of saving "The Cottage", and
WHEREAS, the Save the Cottage Association has entered into various
successful fund-raising activities, and
WHEREAS, the Save the Cottage Association is prepared to accept, refurbish
and relocate "The Cottage" to a site selected by the City of Evanston, and
WHEREAS, the Save the Cottage Association urges that "The Cottage" be used
as a visitor center to promote commercial, cultural and recreational tourism in Evanston,
and
WHEREAS, the productive readaptive use of the refurbished cottage is in the
best interests of the citizens of the City of Evanston. •
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of
Evanston, Cook County, Illinois,
SECTION 1: That the City Manager is hereby directed to work with the Save the
Cottage Association and the newly established Evanston Convention and Visitors
Bureau to develop a plan for use of "The Cottage" as a visitor center for Evanston or for
other public/civic uses.
SECTION 2: That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after
the date of its passage and approval in the manner required by law.
