A RESOLUTION
Authorizing the Renaming of the
Chandler Leisure Center
WHEREAS, Mr. Shel Newberger was a thirteen -year member of the Evanston
Recreation Board and served two terms as its President: and
WHEREAS, he served as Chairman of the Noyes Art Center Challenge Grant
Committee, leading to conversion of a school to a nationally -recognized Cultural
Arts Center; and
WHEREAS, he was a member of the Council of the Nichols Lighted School
and served as Chairman; and

WHEREAS, he was a member and President of the Evanston Library Friends;
WHEREAS, he was a lifetime supporter of youth sports in Evanston,
including twenty-five years as a team sponsor of Evanston Youth Baseball League
teams: and
WHEREAS, he served as a distinguished member of the Evanston City
Council; and
WHEREAS, he was steadfastly concerned about the welfare of all
citizens, especially the leisure time needs of those citizens: and
WHEREAS, he maintained a leadership role in the decision to build the
Chandler Park Leisure Center; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Newberger died in August, 1992: and

WHEREAS, Mr. Newberger's lifelong civic contributions support waiver
of the customary five-year wait after a person's death prerequisite to
eligibility for having a public place named in his honor; and
WHEREAS, the Committee on Public Place Names has recommended that the
Chandler Park Leisure Center to renamed the Chandler -Newberger Leisure Center;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
SECTION 1: That the Chandler Park Leisure Center be renamed the
Chandler -Newberger Leisure Center.
SECTION 2 : This Resolution shall be in full force and effect following
its passage and approval in the manner required by law.
