A RESOLUTION
PROPOSED GUN CONTROL
WHEREAS, public leaders and governmental bodies need to
propose policy statements that reflect legislative reality as
well as social ideals; and
WHEREAS, personal safety, family trauma, injury and
death are significant public health issues due to the growing
epidemic of violence involving guns in our community, state, and
county.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY ILLINOIS:
SECTION 1: The City Government, and Evanston/Skokie
School Boards of Districts 65 and 202 urge the federal government
to take swift and immediate action to:
1. Pass the Brady Bill immediately.
2. Define guns and ammunition as hazardous
products to be regulated appropriately by the
National Product Safety Council.
3. Impose a tax on sales of guns and ammunition
at the Federal, State and Local levels.
4. Pass strict liability legislation holding the
manufacturers and dealers of guns traced to
personal injury or wrongful death liable for
civil damages.
5. Enact child accident protection legislation
making parents responsible for putting guns
in a safe, locked area where children cannot
gain access.
6.* Ban the manufacture, sale and possession of
assault weapons at the Federal, State and
local levels.
7.* Eliminate mail order of guns and ammunition.
8.* Ban the manufacture, sale and possession of
handguns at the Federal, State and Local
levels.
* Except for police or military purposes.
SECTION 2: This Resolution shall be in full force
and effect following its passage and approval in the manner
required by law.
