HomeMy WebLinkAbout079-R-20 Designating that Portion of Dodge Avenue Between Lake Street and Church Street with the Honorary Street Name Sign, "Black Lives Matter Way"9/21 /2020 79-R-20 A RESOLUTION Designating that Portion of Dodge Avenue Between Lake Street and Church Street with the Honorary Street Name Sign, i°Black Lives Matter Way" WHEREAS, the Black Lives Matter Movement is a humanitarian cause that seeks to redress injustices that affect Black lives; and WHEREAS, Black Lives Matter has challenged Evanstonians to explore past and present injustices that affect Black lives and the future of Black lives; and WHEREAS, Black Lives Matter is a collaborative and collective endeavor amongst Evanstonians; and WHEREAS, the mission of Black Lives Matter seeks "to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes"; and WHEREAS, the residents of the City of Evanston continue to advocate against police brutality and systemic racism in the City through protests, rallies, marches and events in support of Black Lives Matter; and WHEREAS, the Black Lives Matter Movement is uniquely shaping the City of Evanston as residents are engaging in unprecedented conversations about race, including the City's youth population; and WHEREAS, Dodge Avenue between Lake Street and Church Street is home to Evanston Township High School, a school that has a long standing history of 79-R-20 dedication to racial equality implementing racial equity programming to close the racial achievement gap; and WHEREAS, anyone who resides, works or visits Evanston is likely to pass through Dodge Avenue and may be reminded that Black Lives Matter; and WHEREAS, the City of Evanston stands in support of the Black Lives Matter Movement, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EVANSTON, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS, THAT: SECTION 1: The foregoing recitals are hereby found as fact and incorporated herein by reference. SECTION 2: On behalf of the entire citizenry of the City of Evanston, the City Council hereby expresses appreciation for the Black Lives Matter Movement by designating that portion of Dodge Avenue between Lake Street and Church Street "Black Lives Matter Way." SECTION 3: This Resolution 79-R-20 will be in full force and effect from and after the date of its passage and approval in the manner provided by law.
